i hate breaking the rules.

Sweater: Thrifted, Top: Forever 21, Necklace: F21, Jeans: Miss Me, Shoes: Target

I like to think of myself as daring and bold, so what I'm about to say/already said in my title is going to make me sound like a dull old lady.

I hate breaking rules.

Actually, I'm so boring that I don't take risks even when there are no expressed rules anywhere. It's like, I'm in a situation and my shoulder angels pop up, but instead of one being good and the other being evil, they're just both good.
I just hate getting in trouble I guess!

There is this place Ian and I always park at downtown because it's free for customers. Even though we don't shop there we park there anyway and just go in and buy some candies, that way if we ever got a ticket we'd have the receipt to prove that we were paying customers (my twitchy idea).

A couple weeks ago we parked there when we went to dinner. In an attempt to restrain my high strung tendencies, I told Ian that we didn't need to go buy me my Mentos this time. And although I'd rather pay $2 for some candy over a $40 ticket, I was willing to take my chances!

We had the best dinner at one of our favorite restaurants and then we went to a shop.
We walk back to the car and IT'S NOT THERE.

I almost cried.

Ian called the number on the towing company sign and they said if we picked it up by midnight they'd only charge us $210. If we were a minute late, however, they'd bump it up to $450.

Ian wanted to take a cab and, even though I was in heels, I refused to pay another dime that night because I'm also high strung about finances. A $210 car tow was not in the budget,  so there sure wasn't any room in my wallet for a cab ride!

We walked across the city all night until we finally reached our shady destination. You'd think with all the money they make from towing cars the place would be a little more luxurious! (Yes, I just said that).

I actually felt really sorry for the guy that had to work there all night.
He was standing behind this glass window thing and he said it was because people get so mad they used to spit on him. That's sad, but I tell ya, I felt like spitting that night!

This instance is precisely why I hate breaking the rules. Even if you've pulled it off before, there's always the risk of getting caught the next time and it's just not worth it!

P.S. I did a guest post on budget-friendly shopping over at Urban Nester

  1. oh my gosh don't even get me STARTED on towing companies. There is NO reason it needs to cost that much $$. After the 2nd time I got towed, I luckily made friends with one of the guys that worked there so any time I knew I was parking somewhere I might get towed, I told him and he told all the drivers not to tow my car. =)

  2. Haha, I'm the same way. I'm always so uptight about breaking rules, but I'd like to think it's a good thing, right?! Sorry about what happened! On a good note, you look as darling as ever! Love your jeans.

  5. Bummer! My husband will drive around downtown forever looking for street parking at night because he is so unwilling to pay for parking. I would almost rather break the rules, but getting your car towed sounds terrible!

  6. Ugh, the best thing to do is just to say, "well, what's done is done," and then try to forget about it. I've been towed one time. It sucked, and I tried to just "write it off,"
    I love your jeans!

  7. oh Sarah!! I am so not a rule breaker either! I have never had a detention, and in high school when I'd be almost tardy or the few times I was tardy, I almost peed my pants!! haha. :) It's not bad to live on the safe side! ;)

P.s. you look beautiful as ever!

  9. This is really interesting because I learned recently that women ages 17-74 only take 5 risks in their lifetime. That really stinks about the car being towed!! :(

  11. how annoying! That would happen to me, why i never park on doudle yellows even if there a gazillion other cars parked on double yellows all around! On the plus side, your cardigan is a lovely colour!
